Beautiful walk around the castle ruins & surrounding areas, as typical in February it's a bit muddy because of the rain but the area is absolutely stunning! Very quiet so perfect for getting away from hustle and bustle!
Nice set of ruins to visit. There are good information boards about the history dotted about.
The path from the car park can get a bit muddy and rough, with lots of the original cobbles to walk on, but well worth a look about. There is a cafe near the entrance, but it was closed when we visited.
It was free to look around.
We saw signs for this whilst driving from one place to another so decided to call in.
It's a completely free attraction.
It is not a wheelchair accessible attraction, there are kissing gates and really uneven footpaths.
We enjoyed visiting and learned a lot.
There are no toilets.
Very close by is an ice cream parlour with a playground and toilets with it's own parking
A glorious medieval castle, one of a chain guarding this vital pass through the Pennines and the lead mines. Brough was constructed in the remains of a Roman military fort so is incredibly well sited and defended. The back wall is above a steep bank and a river so the only way to attack was from the front. Amazingly, Brough is free to visit, even though it’s as good as any castle in the UK. Level access and nearby parking. There’s an ice cream parlour and cafe next door too
Nice castle and ice cream parlour/ tea room with a great kids' play area. There is a little carpark at the tea room if you are visiting there but another parking area further down if you are just visiting the castle. The castle is free to walk around with nice views of the local area, the information boarda dotted arpund the castle explain its history etc. There are horses/ponies and sheep on the route to the castle itself, so a very nice little amble up the incline to castle.
Lovely ruin and some good areas to explore. The only reason its not 5 stars is because you could not go upto the top of the keep as the gate was locked up. Such a shame there was loads of people knocking round the place who would of liked to see the views.
Free to visit, looked after by English Heritage.
Limited parking in the village nearby...get there before 10am to get a space.
Little cafe next to the castle for refreshments.
Really interesting ruined castle to explore with information boards dotted around. You can walk up part way in the keep to get some great views from a high view point.
We spent about an hour here, reading everything and looking at everything. We spotted some oystercatchers feeding on the ground and saw lots of swallows and house martins too.
Lovely place for an ice cream, especially in the sun.
Plenty of flavours to choose from too.
Plenty of outdoor seating with an amazing park, so great for kids aswell.
Just a 2 minute walk away from the castle which is quite an interesting feature with signs to explain its history.
